Software that Powers Patient Flow

Through Process Automation and Improved Clinical Integration

Just as the name implies, EmCare’s Rapid Admission Process and Gap Orders software, or RAP&GO, speeds the admission process for patients being admitted from the E.D. This proprietary system automates and accelerates internal communications resulting in improved efficiency, less waiting and better patient flow. The Gap Order makes it possible to move the patient to the inpatient unit without the hospitalist coming to the E.D.

RAP&GO leverages technology to help organize and direct the precise information needed for patient admissions – improving communications not only between physicians, but throughout all hospital departments involved in the patient flow process. The benefits of RAP&GO include:

  • Assists emergency physicians in providing the exact information needed by the hospitalists which expedites decision-making and improves confidence
  • Decreases the administrative, non-value-added tasks for physicians and nurses such as making follow-up phone calls, escalating slow response times and tracking the patient
  • The shared tool allows both departments to measure and manage time intervals in order to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Assists case management, the flow manager, bed manager and others with timely automated notifications that keep patient flow on track

RAP&GO puts the emergency physician and the hospitalist on the same page. It eliminates the need for time-consuming back-and-forth conversations and debates that might otherwise occur. Further, it allows for tangible process improvements that can help improve patient care and the patient experience.

How it Works

RAP&GO software relies on shared ownership of the process. Through agreed-upon protocols, shared knowledge bases and safety features, both emergency and hospital medicine physicians have a better understanding of the requirements for each specialty. In addition, by automating the steps that are unrelated to patient care, the physicians can focus on what matters most… physician-to-physician communication, high-quality patient care, patient satisfaction and value.

The RAP&GO software collects the information about a patient’s condition that is relevant to the admission and provide it a format that is useful to both the hospitalist and the emergency physician. So, the two physicians have the exact details they need to quickly render a decision. If the patient meets the established criteria for admission, the emergency physician creates a gap order and the patient can be sent straight to the inpatient unit. The process helps to reduce the time the patient spends boarding in the E.D. and thereby the likelihood of an E.D. bottleneck.

RAP&GO incorporates information about the top 12 conditions that commonly cause about 80 to 85 percent of all inpatient admissions from the hospital’s E.D. With just a few quick clicks, an E.D. physician can determine if a patient meets the hospitalist-approved admission criteria.

Inventing RAP&GO

EmCare’s RAP&GO software was developed by a hospitalist, Nathan Goldfein, M.D., who had the vision to see the communication and flow challenges that existed in hospitals and figured out a way to improve decision-making, communication and flow.

For 20 years before he decided to go into medicine, Dr. Goldfein was a mechanical engineer specializing in industrial engineering and an inventor.

He designed RAP&GO to organize and enhance the vital clinical exchange between emergency and hospital medicine physicians. He found ways to use software and communications technology to manage the information and process. Many of the mundane yet time-consuming and frustrating tasks of calling, tracking and following up are much more effectively managed by software. Consequently, using the software reduces errors, delays and distractions that are natural to humans working in a complex, interruption-driven environment. RAP&GO was invented by a physician to support physicians in saving time and improving service quality to the patient.

All who are associated with coordinating a hospital admission and moving patients more rapidly through the admission process benefit from RAP&GO … and most importantly, so do patients. If your hospital, physicians and patients could benefit from a simple, but powerful solution for expediting patient flow, consider EmCare’s Door-to-Discharge service for emergency and hospital medicine supported by RAP&GO. This service may be just what your hospital needs to reach your goals for patient care metrics.

RAP&GO has added features designed to improve inpatient rounding for the hospitalist team. See EmCare’s Charge Capture for more information.
