Guthrie Troy Community Hospital’s ED Earns Women’s Choice Award

Guthrie Troy Community Hospital, Troy, Pa., was recently awarded the 2015 Woman’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care.

Hospitals earn the Emergency Care Award if they consistently rank among the best of the 3,800 hospitals reporting performance measures reported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Each measure is weighted according to a survey of more than 1,000 women on their priority.

So what’s Guthrie Troy’s secret?

“Our staff must be given credit for this recognition,” says Gregory R. Jelliff, RN, BSN, CCRN, PHRN, Emergency Department Manager. “It’s a goal of ours, and it’s a team effort. The staff focuses on performance measures because they conduct the audits, essentially ‘owning’ the results.”

Jelliff also credits outreach underway in the community as the ED prepares for Chest Pain Center accreditation, which has put the focus on door-to-doctor times. Of the eight measures reported by emergency departments to CMS, women rate door-to-doctor time as the most important criteria when selecting an emergency department. Guthrie’s time to physician, significantly lower than the national average, clearly contributed to this award.

Guthrie Troy Community Hospital, a critical access facility, opened in October 2013. It’s 24-hour emergency department includes a helipad for urgent transport of critically ill and injured patients.

“Our hospital is extremely proud to be recognized by our patients as a leader in local emergency care,” said Staci Covey, President of Guthrie Troy Community Hospital. “To be considered, our hospital had to meet rigorous healthcare satisfaction standards and be highly rated by women who have experienced our care. This award signifies that women across our area can choose Guthrie Troy with confidence, knowing that other women have tried and experienced the exceptional care we provided here and would highly recommend it to their family and friends.”

The Women’s Choice Award seeks to set the standard for helping women to make smarter choices for themselves and their families. The company and its awards identify the brands, products and services that are most recommended and trusted by women. The ‘America’s Best Hospitals and Doctors’ demonstrate exceptional ratings, providing the highest level of care and commitment to their patients’ health and well-being.
