Georgia Emergency Physician Receives 2016 EmCare Commitment to Care Award

Paula Brathwaite, M.D., medical director of emergency services at Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville, Georgia, has been recognized by EmCare as the 2016 Commitment to Care Award winner. EmCare is a leading national physician practice management company and singles out a sole emergency medicine physician for the honor each year.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Dr. Brathwaite. “I am fortunate to be part of a growing emergency services program that is dedicated to serving the needs of our community with compassionate, patient-centered care. Our team of emergency medicine professionals has achieved much over the past few years, gaining certifications in stroke and heart care. It’s a privilege to be associated with such an outstanding organization and team.”

“I can’t think of an emergency physician that epitomizes the spirit of this award better than Dr. Brathwaite,” said Dighton Packard, M.D., chief medical officer for EmCare. “She is an American success story, immigrating from Barbados and pursuing her dream of becoming a physician. Her life experiences have shaped her approach to caring for her patients, and that is something that helps her connect with her patients and their families and places her in a special category of emergency medicine physicians.”

Dr. Brathwaite has led the Piedmont Fayette Hospital emergency department through a period of rapid growth, treating more than 68,000 patients in 2015 compared to 39,000 in 2009. She is a recognized leader among her peers at the hospital. In addition, she gives back to her community by serving as the medical director of the Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center. She also serves as a volunteer with the Barbados Faces Social Development Mentorship Program for girls.

Dr. Brathwaite received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts She completed an internship in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, and an emergency medicine residency at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Brathwaite was honored with the Commitment to Care Award during EmCare’s annual Leadership Conference. The 2016 convention was held at The Wynn in Las Vegas, NV, March 14-16. While the Commitment to Care Award recognizes a single emergency physician from across the United States, EmCare also annually honors individuals from hospital medicine, radiology and anesthesiology as its Physicians of the Year.
